Facebook App Spreading Android Malwares

Even though Google recently introduced a malware-blocking system called Bouncer to keep the Android Market safe from malicious software, crafty spammers and fraudsters are still managing to find ways around the restrictions to get their software onto users’ phones.

Security firm, Sophos have reported that there is malware going around via the Facebook application. The malicious software disguises itself as an Android app named “any_name.apk” or “allnew.apk” and is sent to Android phones via Facebook’s mobile app.

An Android user may receive a Facebook friend request and if the user goes to the requester’s profile to check them out, they could be diverted to another web page instead, where the malicious app will be automatically downloaded.

Although Android doesn’t by default allow apps to be automatically downloaded, some users choose to turn off this protection in order to have access to apps distributed outside of the Android Market. This kind of malware is similar to clickjacking, which takes place very often on Facebook.

Bouncer is a good first step towards protecting Android users, but regardless of what methods are used to lock down the Android Market, spammers and scammers can always find another way in.

Facebook Hacking - Student jailed for Eight Months

26-year-old Glenn Steven Mangham, a student in the UK, has been sentenced to eight months in prison for hacking into Facebook from his bedroom at his parents house. Facebook spent $200,000 (£126,400) dealing with Mangham's crime, which triggered a "concerted, time-consuming and costly investigation.

Glenn Mangham, 26, admitted to infiltrating the website between April and May of last year. Apparently no user details were taken, as he went straight for “invaluable” intellectual property instead. Facebook alerted the authorities last May after they discovered the breach. The FBI took care of the rest, tracing it all back to the UK address. He found his way in by hacking into the account of a Facebook employee.

Facebook operates a bug bounty program in which it pays ethical hackers up to $US 500 for quietly disclosing vulnerabilities. According to reports of Mangham's court appearances, the software development student claimed to have been an ethical hacker who had previously breached Yahoo's system as a service to that company. "It was to identify vulnerabilities in the system so I could compile a report that I could then bundle over to Facebook and show them what was wrong with their system," Mangham told Southwark Crown Court. The judge decided that this was not Mangham's intention at the time.

"You accessed the very heart of the system of an international business of massive size, so this was not just fiddling about in the business records of some tiny business of no great importance," the judge continued, noting that Mangham had at least risked "putting in danger the reputation of an innocent employee of Facebook".

FBI will Shutdown the Internet on March 8

The Internet could go dark for millions of users as early as March 8 because of a virus that has corrupted computers in more than 100 countries. Last year, authorities in Estonia apprehended six men believed responsible for creating a malicious computer script called the DNSChanger Trojan. Once set loose on the Web, the worm corrupted computers in upwards of 100 countries, including an estimated 500,000 in America alone.

The primary impact of this infection is that it caused web surfers to be sent to fraudulent websites by changing what is called the DNS settings on compromised computers.The Domain Name System (DNS) is the backbone of the Internet's address scheme and DNS servers are special computers around the world that act as Internet traffic cops providing directions to websites that you wish to visit.

Though the FBI has shut down the DNSChanger network and put up surrogate servers, they warned the solution was only temporary - and the court-ordered deadline is March 8. When the FBI pinched this group, if they had shut down the rogue DNS servers, everyone that was infected would have instantly been cut off from the Internet so the FBI chose a different strategy.They decided to get a court order allowing them to replace the rogue DNS servers with legitimate stand-ins so that all the infected computers wouldn't get cut off without warning giving them time to get the word out.

Both Windows and MacOS users are at risk for this infection because it exploits your browser, not your operating system. If you are somewhat technical, you can do a self-check of your computer to make sure you're not infected by comparing your computer's DNS setting to the list of rogue DNS servers:

How to Lock Down and Locate a Missing Android Phone for Free

A painful thing has just happened—you've lost your phone. Even worse—it's been stolen!

When your phone turns up missing, the person who found (or stole) it will likely have access to loads of your personal information. Honestly, who really locks their phone? We're talking personal pictures, text messages, contacts... everything. This could even open up your friends to advanced social engineering attacks, thanks to your number coming up on their caller IDs.

Lucky for us, this is the age of the smartphone! Since phones can run extraneous software these days, software can be developed by nearly anyone to remedy this issue, and someone has done just that. In this article, let's use the Lost Phone app to track our Android phone down, lock it, and more.

Step 1: Installing Lost Phone

Before we can have a trackable phone, we must first download the free Android app called Lost Phone. On your phone, you can click on this link directly, or...

Go to the Android Market on your phone.
Search for "Lost Phone" by GadgetProjects.com.
Install it.
Navigate to the app on your Android and open it.

Right away, you will see all sorts of things that you can do with this app.

There is even an option in the app to set up three numbers from friends, in order to send them a temporary password to unlock the device!

Step 2: Playing with the App

Set the app up with all of the necessary information. Password, name, etc. I would follow that up with a "Test Lock" just to ensure that when the deed does in fact happen, you can find your lost phone. From here you can specify SMS codes, among other things, to be able to locate the device via GPS, delete stuff, and more.

This program is pretty great. If a new SIM card is detected, it locks the lost phone and sends an SMS to your friends from the new number, if you set them in the buddy list. Though, I'm not sure I am cool with how it announces to your potential thief what is going down.

Though I guess it redeems itself by giving a return address for the good-hearted lads.

How to Remain Anonymous and Chat Securely with Cryptocat

I'm sure we've all heard about MSN and Yahoo! Messenger, right? They can be useful, but the setup can be quite time consuming for those who need to use it just once or twice—and the privacy statements are a real bother. For example, we must provide our real details. You could use Fake Name Generator, but if you get caught, you will have your account suspended. I don't have a law degree, but to my understanding the United States recently passed legislation that gives the authorities the power to charge people for providing false information to websites that require you to use real details.

This is why I don't recommend the big name instant messengers above. Others big name ones that require real details are, but not limited to the following:

Did you know the government is watching our Skype conversations? Personally, I have nothing wrong with that because it is more about catching the bad guys. However, it can be a little creepy, and potentially embarrassing.

So, the question is—what is the solution to having maximum privacy and security? The Answer is Cryptocat.

Introduction to Cryptocat

Cryptocat is an online chat room that lets you set up secure conversations in just a few clicks. It's open-sourced, released under the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 3.0 Unported license. Messages are encrypted inside your own browser using the AES-256 and 4096-bit asymmetric keys. Within an hour of inactivity, all encrypted data is securely wiped (however, it doesn't state what method is uses to wipe data).

How to Set Up Cryptocat and Use It

Do you want to remain anonymous when using this chat room? I suggest installing TOR and setting it up to use the hidden service located here. This also works on your iPhone, Android and BlackBerry device.

The first step is to enter your name. To remain anonymous, never use your real name. I suggest using Fake Name Generator and selecting a country and gender that doesn't represent you in anyway. Cryptocat also has translations for the following languages: French, Catalan, Basque, Italian, German, Portuguese, Russian and Swedish.

When you have entered your name and pressed enter, you will get the following prompt. For Chrome users, I suggest installing the recommended extension.

You will now be prompted to enter your nickname.

When you have entered your nickname, you will be required to type as randomly as possible in the box presented in order to create your keys.

Now, you will finally be in the chat room. But lets take a look around and see all the options first. First things first, there is a 256 character limit (which sucks), but it is better than nothing. You can add as many people as you want to the chat room using the link at the bottom of the chat room.

You can also click on any of the people who are in the chat room to view more details. For example, it will tell you how to send them a direct message that no one else in the chat room will see. In my case, it was @mrunknowns. You can also choose whether to accept or block messages from that person and you can verify their identity using the fingerprints.

The circled button is how you widen the chat room (I took the shot with it widened) and the arrow points to the upload button which we will talk about more in the next image.

You can also send encrypted images to selected recipients. The maximum size as shown below is 512kb and documents aren't allowed.

Lastly, you should always make sure your bar includes "HTTPS".

FBI will Monitor Social Media using Crawl Application

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking for a better way to spy on Facebook and Twitter users. The Bureau is asking companies to build software that can effectively scan social media online for significant words, phrases and behavior so that agents can respond.A paper posted on the FBI website asks for companies to build programs that will map sentiment and wrongdoing.

“The application must be infinitely flexible and have the ability to adapt quickly to changing threats to maintain the strategic and tactical advantage,” the Request for Information said, “The purpose of this effort is to meet the outlined objectives…for the enhancement [of] FBI SOIC’s overall situation awareness and improved strategic decision making.”The tool would be used in “reconnaisance and surveillance missions, National Special Security Events (NSS) planning, NSSE operations, SOIC operations, counter intelligence, terrorism, and more.

Although the police, including in Britain, already use Facebook routinely to ascertain the whereabouts of criminals, automatically filtering out irrelevant information remains challenging. The new FBI application will be able to automatically highlight the most relevant information. The FBI is seeking responses by 10 February.

"HaXoreD BY Federal," reads the banner of the newly defaced RihannaOnline.net, a site that normally posts news, lyrics and images of singer Rihanna Fenty.

Anonymous Operations this morning on Twitter said that the hack had come from Anonymous Morocco in response to the arrest of Kim Dotcom in New Zealand last week. Dotcom, the founder and head of file-sharing site Megaupload.com was nabbed along with six others on alleged piracy charges.

Panasonic China Website Hacked and Redirected

The official Chinese website of Panasonic, the world renowned manufacturer of electronics and high-tech gadgets, has suffered a data breach.

The hackers altered the site’s main page and added a Refresh Meta tag that redirected users to another location where their message was posted, The Hacker News informs.
Currently the website still redirects visitors to the website that reveals the name of the hacker, Q-R3ST.
Judging by the defaced site, the black hat is from India and part of a hacker group called Vatan.

The initial source reports that the DarkDevilz Crew is behind the breach, which may mean that after one group hacked and defaced the site, another hacker collective may have gained access to the defacement site and claimed credit for the operation.

Regardless of who is responsible for the breach, hopefully Panasonic moves to fix the security flaws.

Anonymous Hackers Brings Down FBI Website for #OpMegaupload

Megaupload.com, one of the world's most popular sources of online piracy, has been shut down by a federal indictment issued Thursday, which seized and charged seven people connected with it with running an international enterprise based on internet piracy. Online piracy by the two companies - Megaupload Ltd and Vestor Ltd - generated more than $ 175 million in criminal proceeds and caused more than half a billion dollars in harm to copyright owners.

Hacking group Anonymous said Thursday it knocked out the websites of the FBI, U.S. Department of Justice, and several entertainment industry sites as retribution for anti-piracy efforts by both the government and the entertainment industry. Anonymous said it was "the largest attack ever," with 5,635 participants involved in bringing down the sites. The two government sites were up and running again after several hours.

Megaupload stood as one of the most popular file storage services on the internet, allowing users to upload and share files that included movies and music, among other media. With a timeliness that borders on satirical, public uproars over antipiracy bills SOPA and PIPA in Congress ran in tandem with the arrests and seizure.

Anonymous have compiled and published a dossier containing personal information about employees of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and US Democratic party leaders and their families.

Megaupload has preemptively defended these charges with the following assertion:

Mega has over 150 million registered users and over 50 million daily unique visitors. Employees of over 70% of the world’s Fortune 500 companies have accounts with us. We have become the de-facto standard for sending files that are too big to email. We are the most popular hard disk in the cloud. We host more backups than any other company. If Mega is a rogue operator as we have been unfairly labelled by the MPAA and RIAA, then what about Google? What about Yahoo? And every single ISP? At any given time, they all host pirated, illegal or even criminal content for which they are not liable nor legally obliged to prevent their users from posting. They are, like Megaupload, online service providers who are in no position to monitor or restrict their users’ activities. There are technical, practical and legal reasons why these entities as a whole enjoy safe harbor protection all over the world. Service providers like Megaupload are simply better off focusing on providing a better service to their customers than fending off lawsuits from third parties unhappy about content.

That said, all service providers have to deal with the challenge of online piracy, just like us. Google probably hosts the world’s largest index of pirated content and yet no one has characterized them as rogue. Why not sue the manufacturers of external USB hard drives or burnable DVDs? They can be used for illegal purposes, too. Microsoft’s Windows operating system is the world’s largest enabler of piracy. Windows is used to transfer and consume pirated content on a massive scale every day. And yet Microsoft is not rogue. This double standard should not be imposed on Megaupload since it finds no basis in either logic or the law. All we want is equal treatment.

How many people use the big search engines here? I'm going to estimate 90% of everyone uses one of the following on a regular basis: Google, Bing or Yahoo! Search. The question is: are you in that 10%? You should seriously consider dumping Google search for DuckDuckGo. Why? DuckDuckGo does not track you.

Here is a short demonstration on how Google tracks you:

You searched for the word "herpes" on Google Search. That will then show up on Google Analytics as a referral with information about your location, browser and other data such as your IP address.
When you search "herpes", it may lead to targeted advertising being associated with a user profile and how that could "potentially show up in unwanted places like insurance, credit & background checks".
Google saves searches to its Web History tool (disable it here) and the saved searches may be requested by legal authorities. Google employees have also been caught snooping on users.

How to Change the Default Search Engine in Firefox

Do you often use the URL bar in Firefox to search your query? Well, you aren't alone on this one. The problem is that Google is the default search engine. Therefore I have made this tutorial to demonstrate how to change the default engine, plus how to add perimeters to make the search results more relevant while not taking away your rights to privacy.

In the URL bar enter:

about:config and accept the warning.

Search for keyword.URL and put in https://www.duckduckgo.com to get results from DuckDuckGo. To make the search results more relevant, see here. You can now generate a custom perimeter that will suit your search needs. An example perimeter is this:

This perimeter will now be entered into keyword.URL so that you can get the results that will meet your needs.

Tips

Not sure what perimeters to use? Easy. My suggestion is to enable HTTPS (a secure connection), disable advertisements, and click on the country you live in to get the most relevant results. Just remember: DuckDuckGo doesn't track you, and it doesn't record your Internet Protocol address while Google does.

URL Redirection Vulnerability in Google & Facebook

An open redirect is a vulnerability that exists when a script allows redirectionto an external site by directly calling a specific URL in an unfiltered, unmanaged fashion, which could be used to redirect victims to unintended, malicious web sites. A web application accepts a user-controlled input that specifies a link to an external site, and uses that link in a Redirect.

A similar vulnerability is reported in Google by

The user may be redirected to an untrusted page that contains malware which may then compromise the user's machine. This will expose the user to extensive risk and the user's interaction with the web server may also be compromised if the malware conducts keylogging or other attacks that steal credentials, personally identifiable information (PII), or other important data.
The user may be subjected to phishing attacks by being redirected to an untrusted page. The phishing attack may point to an attacker controlled web page that appears to be a trusted web site. The phishers may then steal the user's credentials and then use these credentials to access the legitimate web site.

Protect Your Computer, Network, and Wi-Fi From Hackers

Main reason of hacking attempts is the fact, that the average internet user holds a belief that setting
up network security is a complex process, and hence chooses to ignore it altogether.
However, as many experts have previously explained, protecting your computer and network from intrusion by hackers is quite an easy task to achieve. It is more or less a case of simple precautionary measures that can ensure your system from being compromised.
Here are a few of such measures, that you can take to avoid being a target of a cyber attack:

Operating system manufacturers often release updates to address security concerns in their existing operating systems. You should make it a habit to keep your particular operating system updated.

Stay aware of the fact that many system hacks are due to user passwords that are easy to guess. So try to make all your passwords as a combination of symbols, numerals and letters which makes it difficult to guess.

You should use routers for any type of internet connection. Routers use a method known as Network Address Translation commonly abbreviated as NAT, which is functionally similar to a firewall. NAT prevents the ports from being scanned. Apart from that, the router adds to security by using external IP address while the computer utilizes an internal IP address.

Use good spyware and virus scanners and keep them updated regularly. This should prevent latest viruses from affecting your system.

Use WPA2 encryption technique if you are on a wi-fi network. It is better and comparatively more secure to the WEP encryption technique.

A good practice if you are into using wireless networks, is to change the network’s Service Set Identifier also known as SSID and setting it to invisible. The SSID acts as a unique identifier for your wi-fi network and is broadcasted by your router. This allows other devices which are trying to connect your network, to see your SSID. You can navigate to your router’s security settings and from there, you can change the network SSID from a manufacturer preset one to the one you desire. Then, you can also make it invisible so that your network will not be discoverable and your router will not broadcast the SSID information.

Open access wi-fi hotspots are networks which allow users to connect to them without a password. Open wi-fi networks seem to be lucrative options for accessing web content at places like airports. This is where it could actually become a potentially dangerous option as an intruder might connect to the same network and steal your sensitive information. One simple precaution that you can follow is to limit the content you access on such networks and avoid websites that require you to enter user-sensitive data.

The user has to be aware of the threats that surround him, if he wishes to combat them. On a conclusive note, you can really help the cause of protecting yourself from hackers if you follow simple rules and precautions as the ones outlined above.

DDOS Vulnerability in Train Switching System

A DDOS(Distributed Denial of Service) vulnerability in Train Switching system allows hackers to shutdown the computers and disrupt the Train service, Stefan Katzenbeisser(Professor at Technische Universitat Darmstadt in Germany) said at a hacking conference in Berlin.

"Trains could not crash, but service could be disrupted for quite some time," Katzenbeisser told Reuters on the sidelines of the convention.

A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a person or people to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely.

Train switching systems, which enable trains to be guided from one track to another at a railway junction, have historically been separate from the online world, but communication between trains and switches is handled increasingly using wireless technology.

Katzenbeisser said GSM-R, a mobile technology used for trains, is more secure than the usual GSM, used in phones, against which security experts showed a new attack at the convention.

"Probably we will be safe on that side in coming years. The main problem I see is a process of changing ... keys. This will be a big issue in the future, how to manage these keys safely," Katzenbeisser said.

The software encryption 'keys', which are needed for securing the communication between trains and switching systems, are downloaded to physical media like USB sticks and then sent around for installing -- raising the risk of them ending up in the wrong hands.

80 Percentage of GSM Phones Vulnerable to Remote Access

Karsten Nohl,German Researcher have found a vulnerability in GSM mobile phones that allow hackers to gain the Remote access and instruct them to send SMS or make call.

"The GSMA and its mobile network operator members are confident in the security of existing 2G GSM networks and real attacks on real networks against real customers are most unlikely," it said in a statement, adding that newer technologies are safer and not impacted by the new research.

Similar attacks against a small number of smartphones have been done before, but this new attack can affect any cellphone using GSM technology.

"We can do it to hundreds of thousands of phones in a short time frame," Nohl told Reuters ahead of a presentation on the topic at a hacking convention in Berlin on Tuesday.

Each GSM command is exactly 23 bytes long. In most cases, Nohl said that leaves room for carriers to send random data that makes messages harder to intercept. However, some messages use the full 23 bytes requiring a more sophisticated workaround to make things secure.

Researchers analyzed 32 operators in 11 countries(Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Slovakia, Switzerland and Thailand) for this kind of vulnerability and protection. The result is Negative , Nohl says "None of the networks protects users very well".

Nohl said mobile telecom operators could easily improve their clients' security, in many cases by just updating their software.

"Mobile network is by far the weakest part of the mobile ecosystem, even when compared to a lot attacked Android or iOS devices," Nohl added.

Start your computer and enter into Bios Setup. Change your boot preferences to boot from CD /DVD.

Then you’ll copy the command prompt executable (cmd.exe) over top of the sticky keys executable

How to Remove a Windows Password with a Linux Live CD

Back when I was a Windows user, I know I'm not the only one who has experienced password loss—that moment where you just can't remember your password. Sometimes it happens to the best of us. So, how can we get into the system without paying a local geek or geeksquad to do it? First, we have to look into how Windows stores their passwords.

When Windows saves your user passwords, it stores them in a SAM file. It stores users' passwords in a hashed format (in LM hash and NTLM hash). Since a hash function is one-way, this provides some measure of security for the storage of the passwords. However, this can still be bruteforced.

Some time ago there was an exploit that allowed you to delete the SAM file and log into any account without a password. This is fixed, since Windows no longer allows access to the SAM file while Windows is running. So today, we are going to use a Linux Live CD to remove a Windows password using the chntpw tool.

Requirements

BackTrack 5 on a DVD, or a Linux install with chntpw
A password on a Windows installation

Step 1: Boot From BackTrack

Text in bold is a terminal command.

Put the disc in your computer.
Hit the the setup button.
Change CD/DVD to be first on the boot order.
Exit the setup and save your settings.
When you get to the console, boot with; user:root password:toor.
Boot into the KDE desktop environment:
startx
Open a terminal.

Step 2: Mount Drive & Change Windows Password

Now we have to mount the Windows drive partition to modify the password, or remove it completely.

First, we have to mount the hard drive partition that the Windows installation is located on..
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/
Change to the directory that the SAM file is in so that we can prepare to modify its contents.
cd /mnt//Windows/System32/config
List the users on the computer contained in the SAM file.
chntpw -l SAM
Change a specific user account password.
chntpw -u USERNAME SAM
Now, lets unmount the drive and boot from Windows to use the updated or cleared password.
umount /dev/sda1

Saint Andrew's Binder is a free software used to bind or combine two or more files in one file under one name and extension. The files to be binded can have any extension or icon. If binded file contains an application (RAT or Keylogger), the application is also run when the actual binded file is run.

On the date of realising this tool (07.08.2011), binded file was 1/33 AV's Detected on MyAvScan.com only by Avira, but I will fix it soon.

This tool has the same function as downloader.
You just have to upload your keylogger/stealer/RAT server to some direct hosting sites like fileave.com, and put your link to the empty field and create your server.exe file.
Then, you are free to send it to your victims or spread it over internet.
On the date of realising this tool, OUTPUT server was FUD (FullyUndetected)!
So, Don't scan it on virustotal.com
